Stockport & Tameside House Project is a Local House Project (LHP). All LHP's are members of the National House Project.  House Projects support young people leaving care to create their own homes and live connected and fulfilling lives.

House Projects are co-designed with young people. They work together to develop relationships and learn skills that enable them to live successful adult lives. They have a choice in where they live and are involved in getting their property ready to become their home. Stockport & Tameside House Project is represented by young people at the Care Leavers National Movement (CLNM) to ensure that a young person’s voice is at the heart of all decision making. They are joined by representatives from all other LHPs.

We aim to provide a warm and safe environment for young people on the project, so they feel comfortable coming together as one group. This will enable them to complete the accredited House Project Programme that we offer, developing and enhancing their skills getting them ready for independent living. As well as working with the young people in a group setting, they will also get intensive 1-2-1 support helping them build their confidence and develop relationships. There is also an opportunity for them to go on a residential as a group and produce their own film.

We offer each young person a self-contained, one bedroom property in the Stockport and Tameside area via a number of social landlords. We are currently working with Stockport Homes and Jigsaw who are registered social landlords in order to secure suitable properties for our young people.

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.
