The Stockport & Tameside House Project started on 20th June 2022 and became fully staffed on 15th August when the Facilitators commenced in post.
The House Project is AQA accredited so even if the young people are not in College they will be considered in education. The young people who join the project will work their way through 12 modules which concentrate on getting them tenancy ready and teach them interdependent skills, limiting the risk of tenancy breakdowns. One of the most important parts of the project is building a community encouraging young people on the project to make friends and support each other.
We will be working closely with housing providers in both councils to identify suitable properties for the young people in our cohort allowing them some choice in where they would like to live.
Our plan is to work with young people arming them with the skills to be able to navigate through independent life and manage their own tenancy.
The House Project is an option for any young person leaving care who is committed and wants to work towards independent living and managing their own tenancy.
We are building our first cohort of 10-12 young people across two local authorities, something that hasn’t been tackled before on the House Project. The Facilitators have been meeting with young care leavers building relationships, so they feel more at ease with the programme and more comfortable in the weekly group sessions.
Tameside Council’s Deputy Executive Leader Councillor Bill Fairfoull, who has responsibility for Children and Families, said:
I’m delighted that care leavers in Tameside will be able to benefit from this fantastic scheme, which has made a huge difference to those involved in other areas of the UK
I’d like to thank everyone involved for establishing this project in Tameside and I wish the young people taking part all the best as they create a home for themselves and make their way in the world.

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.
