The BeeSmart Digital Champions gang!

The BeeSmart Digital Champions gang!

Posted 11th July 2023

Simone, from the Stockport & Tameside House Project, joined two of the Greater Manchester House Project Founders, Matt and Alex and the BeeSmart team for their Digital Champions training day. The BeeSmart initiative is a joint venture between GMCA and Internet Matters, funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport focusing on upskilling young people leaving care with digital skills literacy.

The BeeSmart team plan to train 50-70 digital champions across Greater Manchester including young people leaving care, PAs/professionals and local graduates, enabling them to deliver workshops to care experienced young people across Greater Manchester. It is also a great way for our young people on the House project to meet the internet safety and awareness criteria that is part of HPP and they get a £50 voucher for taking part, making it a win-win situation for all involved.

It was great to see Simone, Alex and Matt, interact so well with the BeeSmart team and their constructive feedback and ideas on how best to deliver workshops for care leavers. All in all, it was a very productive and enjoyable afternoon and the gang are now looking forward to delivering their own workshops to House project cohorts and the wider services within Greater Manchester.

Simone, Alex and Matt want to give a big thank you to the BeeSmart team, the National House Project and Becky for giving them the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence and empower them to raise awareness and make a difference!!!

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.
